Hi all,
I've got a problem with a user running Outlook 2002. What appears to be
happening is that Outlook is trying to establish multiple POP sessions.
Say for instance there's a large email in the mail account, with a 2Mb
attachment that my user is currently downloading (about 6 minutes at 56K).
Also assume that Outlook is set to check automatically for new mail every 5
minutes. After 5 minutes of downloading the 2Mb email, while the POP
session is still active, the automatic email checking kicks in and tries to
establish a second POP session. The server won't let the second attempt to
log in go ahead, as once you've logged in it locks your account.
As far as I can tell, at this point Outlook generates the "mailbox in use"
error, but for some reason it also dies painfully and has to be shut down
manually from the Task Manager. This leaves the first POP session open, so
when you re-open Outlook you have a half-downloaded attachment and you
can't check your mail because the POP account is still locked.
I can understand the value of multi-threading in a POP environment, but I
can't understand why it's so hard for a technically proficient customer to
find a simple setting in a Microsoft product to turn off what is
essentially a non-standard feature. Does anyone know of any such setting?
Or alternatively has anyone had to re-configure their POP server because of
this?
The Raq4 claims to be running something called "QPOP".
Thanks
Chris Bell
