OK, interesting question. it seems I am not the only one seeing that the GUI
restores just dont seem to work (why are they there?).
Upon digging thru the KB, I find that Sun recommends rebuilding the box to
the patch level that the box was last backed up, then re-create the sites
(in the same order mind you), THEN restore using the restore utility. Thats
all well and good... unless you have 100 sites on the box.
Is it just me, or does that COMPLETELY negate a full server backup? When I
restore any other OS (not counting apps that do "bare metal" restores) I
only have to get the basic OS and the restore software on the box; not get
it 90% there manually, ONLY restoring user created files. I can understand
getting the OS back on first, but come on, this is riddiculous.
I am beginning to find Cobalt/SUN's failure to mention things like this (and
treating them as normal as the sun shining at noon) quite humorous in that
sick, mentally deranged "I give up" nervous breakdown kinda way....
SO... on a positive note, anyone know of any reasonably priced backup (and
restore) solutions that actually DO work and are reasonably priced for a
small business? (less than $500)
How about the VXA1 Tape drive solution they recommend on the solutions site?
Anyone having success with that (or similar)?
Does a reasonable full system restore even exist for RAQs?
Roy
PS so what happens if you jump thru the hoops above and accidentally
re-create your sites out of order? I assume sites get restored to the wrong
directories? Like abc.com restored to def.com, def.com restored to ghi.com,
etc?
Roy,
I use a company, who quite frequently contribute to this forum to do my
backups on a weekly basis. They use rysnc. I think the price is reasonable,
@ approx $40.00 per month (although, this is dependant on bandwidth used) I
know many people do not want this list to become an advertising list, so if
you wish to get the name of the company, you can contact me off list.
Regards,
Declan.
