I've heard that patches have been written that will allow some kernels to
handle up to 256 groups per user, which would all but solve the problem. I
am almost positive there is nothing that can be done without modifying the
kernel. As far as why the kernel has a limitation of 32 groups I can't give
you the proper answer - perhaps you can check a kernel related site or
mailing list (or maybe someone more knowledgable on the subject will post
here). Here's a link to a message by someone who patched the 2.2.10 kernel
more than 2 years ago to increase the group limit.
