[cobalt-users] Question Per RPM's + Raq 3

Hello, I know a lot of people say .pkg's aren't avail
for raq 3 when talking about PHP 4+. That is true, I checked the packages on 
cobalt's site

So I see freetype and PHP 4+ have rpm's (I don't want to discuss the 
tarballs they have on their site, just for this question)

Now, my question is if rpm's run/work for raq 3
and if they are better than untarring
and using
make
make install

I really want freetype 2 installed on my raq 3, the untar/install process I 
can't confirm at the freetype site and the horrible freetype mailing list

SO would the rpm download from the rpm linux site i found be more suitable 
and install automatically?

Or is untarring from the tarball on freetype the only solution?
Do rpm's solve more problems and automate the process better for raq 3? That 
is my question

Thanks. Esp. for free type 2. I'm f'd without this on our raq 3
