Sigh, a lot of folks have died/gone out of business pronouncing things
about standards.
Let's face it, like it or not, all of us in this business need to pay
attention to/and or humor Micrrosoft/Microsoft users. We may not agreee
with them, we may know their implimentation is "not standard" but we also
need to realize that our offerings need to accomodate their "technology".
I think what's more important than whether or not .htm and/or .html is
correct is whether or not our business offerings are workable and/or
efficient...and I'd submit that because Cobalt refused to acknowledge how
pervasive MS is, that the end result is we have to either tell our
customers that because they are on a "correct" server, they need to change
their wrong-thinking Front Page, or we need to correct our "correct
thinking" Cobalt generated pages.
I gave up years ago trying to convince people to give me money by telling
them their tools were broken, or they didn't know enough to use them, or
that my vendor was smarter than theirs. It just seemed so much easier(and
the bank balance proved it) for me to operate in a way that confirmed to
the customer that not only did I provide the services he/she needed, but
that I respected what they were doing(since I didn't tell them not to use
the Dog Breath Editor, or that Dog Breath was non-standard).
With this in mind, it seems to me that Cobalt could have taken the time
to configure the GUI and all it's magical scripts to ask the system
owner(the washing machine operator) some dumb-assed simple setup
questions such as:
Front Page: Use .htm or .html ?
Mailserver: Use mail.domain.com, www.domain.com, other.domain.com
(Or for the REAL anal folks)
Mailing List:majordomo, smartlist
But you see, that approach would imply that the box owner was more than a
washing machine owner, and belie the hype that you don't need to know
nothin' bout *nix to buy one of these blue puppies and be in the hosting
business.
In the pre-Sun days, this type of flexability and choice could have been a
support nightmare....but now, with the new 0 seconds or 0 feet policy,
support is no longer a concern (g).
