Thanks, Johan! I found a reference to what I was partially remembering -
'alternative' root servers. New.net is offering 'alternative' TLDs such as
.law, .golf, etc. and requires that you add their 'root' DNS servers to your
resolver in order to access them. They also have 'plugins' to help
non-techie NS / IE users 'upgrade' to see these new TLDs.
