Just wanted to point out that you don't have to reboot after adding things
to /etc/hosts.

Yes. That right. I neglected to mention...before I posted this morning I had already fixed the problem by adding his firewall to /etc/hosts. My post wasn't so much, "How to I fix this?"

I was really asking something more basic about nslookups and the Raq configuration.

I don't want to have to keep adding IP's to the hosts file each time they don't have a reverse defined for their IP. So specifically:

1. Is it ultimately the client's problem (i.e. he has incomplete DNS information)? Or are default reverse lookups something specific to Cobalts and not other machines --he is complaining that he's only had difficulty with my server.

2. When are reverse lookups performed? They don't appear to happen using HTTP or POP but are invoked on SMTP and telnet/ssh? Why? Is there an easy way to shut them off for SMTP? Is this advisable?

Thanks for all the helpful responses.
