Hello all,
I have resolved my problem. I finally found the username.lock file in
/var/spool/mail but missed the .username.pop file (note the preceding dot).
By this time the mail file had gotten so huge (250+ MB) that the mail client
was timing out trying to receive the email and then leaving the pop lock in
place again. I finally telneted into the server as the user and used PINE
to delete mail that was unimportant or junk bringing the total or emails
from 1800 or so to a more manageable 100. Thank to all who gave advice.

Subject: [cobalt-users] Pop Lock on RAQ 3
Hello all
I have a user that is receiving a pop lock error and keeps getting asked for
his password. I have looked for the username.pop file and the
username.locked file in /var/spool/mail and in /home/spool/mail and in
/home/sites/home/users/username but cannot find the locked file to delete.
I have increases his available disk space as the knowledge base recommends.
Still a no go. What am I missing?
