[cobalt-users] DNS Question

Hi,

I have named based domains on a RAQ 4i. Have reserved one of eight IP
numbers to use while moving/testing transferred domains. After
transfer/testing, I assign the appropriate "group" IP for the name based
hosting to the new domain depending on its category (this done in site
settings and DNS settings), save configuration. Only then do I request
that the registrar switch the new domain's nameserver to this server.

Previously, any new domain starts working on the RAQ within 24 to 36
hours by domain name, and a whois shows that the nameserver has indeed
been switched to the RAQ. Today, after following the above procedure to
the letter, I noticed that the most recently-transferred domain is
working on the RAQ today, but it shows as IP no., NOT the domain's
assigned group one, but the testing IP instead, so instead of serving
the new domain's pages, the machine serves the domain I'm currently
moving that has the testing IP -- then jumps to the non-transferred
site's current nameserver, not on this machine! In other words, a
browser asks for abc.com, housed on this machine, and it gets xyz.com,
currently served from another machine.

Questions: How was the testing IP propagated as the new name-based
domain's IP number when no request was made for nameserver switch until
the after the new domain was assigned its permanent IP address? Will
this "wrong IP address" problem resolve itself over time (briefly, I
hope)? If not, what can I do to correct the mis-addressing?

Have checked and rechecked all settings for this domain in the RAQ
panel, and the settings are correct -- i.e. A addresses for both www and
non www aliases with the correct IP, correct SOA, correct domain name/IP
in site settings, etc. All other domains on the machine were set up
identically and are accessible by domain name. Have also checked the
server's record file, the pri. files, and the httpd.conf file. All
entries show the correct IP for the domain in question.

Thanks for any suggestions -- Nell Bolen
