How about showing us what you actually wrote in your htaccess, instead of
being so mysterious.

This sounds likes M........s..t customer, "it doesn't work", that's all
people say but instead of just submitting a clear bug report.


For info a htaccess should look like this

order allow,deny
allow from all
require valid-user
Authname "$realm"
AuthPam_Enabled off
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile $file

And it should work. At least it does for me.
