It's nasty having to deal with customers, isn't it? ;-)
Again, my humble opinion: shell access is not an option on production
machines that are shared by many (or a few) customers if those other
customers do not know about it. Perhaps you could put these customers
together on a 'shell enabled' box, so they don't pose a risk to your other
customers?
They could always set up their own Linux box with mysql-client and have it
their way. Have you consulted them about that option?
