I know this does not help but we have been having the similar problems.
Nothing to explain it. The only thing that saves us is that we have
monitoring in place to notify us when it happens so that we can fix it.
When it happens it just stops accepting email. If you do a stop the service
looks like it stops. Then you issue a start and it does not fully start.
Does partially. It usually requires issuing the stop command giving a good
60 seconds of waiting before issuing a start command to get it to start
successfully?
In any case a stop and start always fix it. The way I know it starts
correctly is when I issue the start command it returns with the word
sendmail. When it does not start all the way I get the starting sendmail but
no return sendmail. Look in the logs and it does everything except start the
daemon.
It seemed that our monitor application built into the raq server was causing
this so we disabled it. Also after an upgrade to the recent 4.0 release our
monitor starting sending out all kinds of messages about low memory when we
have 256MB of ram on a very low usage site. Cobalt had fixed this error
message prior to our upgrade once before but now they say that we are
outside our 90 days of free support. My complaint was that this was not a
problem I created but rather one that your PATCH created. They did not seem
to care.
Anyways I disable monitor script and now I no longer get the messages and my
sendmail crashes less frequent. Maybe once a day sometimes maybe once every
few days. It is random and I cannot seem to find any reason. Have logging
turned up to 90 and it shows nothing unusual.
If you figure this out let me know
Oh ya I am running on this server a RAQ1 upgraded to RaQ2 software.
