There's no reason to install the "GD" package at this time...
Probably nothing from Cobalt will break, but any software you may have
installed that actually creates ".gif" files. This is mostly a
"political" issue, because of CompuServe's ownership of the patent used
in .gif files. But you'll find Linux programmers can be extremely
political <wry grin>.
For example, installing the "GD" package may very well break webalizer,
which creates .gif files using the GD library.

The newest webalizer on their site (version 2.01) says it supports .png
files (the new standard, at least for us Linux-ites), but I wouldn't
risk it if you use webalizer unless you want to do a lot "stuff" or lose
the webalizer functionality.
