Yes. The reason the instructions call for recompiling Apache is that it's
compiling PHP into the Apache binary rather than as a DSO.

Yep, that's right. You could install it as a DSO. There have been plenty of
good posts for installing PHP as a DSO on the Raq3. I'd take a stroll
through the archives.

Yes. PHP3 is kind of old now and you might as well upgrade to the latest
stable version.
