At least part of it appears to be a problem with the old version of
WinProxy I'm using. Someone else was able to get into my system (with
the password of course <smile>), so I tried from a dialup, and it worked
fine. Only with IE, though; not with Netscape 4.72.

Sure hope not. I don't allow anyone to use my servers to send mail, and
may never. I recommend my customers don't either. What it comes down
to is do you sell outgoing smtp service or webhosting? Outgoing smtp
service is extremely hard to manage; anyone can use your box to spam
(yes, even with pop-before-smtp), and you're stuck cleaning up the mess.
I don't think that's the problem anymore. I think it's something else
entirely.
