Make sure the crossover cable works, test it by going NIC to NIC on two PC's
and ping each other (or some other way). Make sure you have a NIC on the PC
you are using for the CD-ROM that is Cobalt approved, when you boot up from
the CD-ROM on a PC it will tell you which NIC's work. I use the LinkSys
EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card (LNE100TX). Believe it or not, I had the 3Com
(3C905BTX) in mine once and it didn't work. I went to the store and got a
the LinkSys one on the list and no problem.
Connect the PC with the CD-ROM and the Cobalt with the crossover cable. Then
boot up from the CD-ROM on the PC with the CD-ROM and appropriate NIC. Set
the BIOS, if necessary, to boot from CD. Follow the instructions that appear
on-screen from the OS Restore Disc. I don't remember what exactly the
message is that you wait for, but I do know that you hold down the 'S'
button while turning on the Cobalt until it reaches that message. The
instructions on-screen will tell you the appropriate message to wait for
while holding the button. Once you receive that message, then release the
'S' button and then keeping pressing and releasing the same 'S' button until
you reach 'Boot from Network'. Again, that might not be the exact message,
but the instructions tell you. I'm not at my data center and can't look at a
RaQ now. I do know this, it is NOT the left and right arrow buttons.
Hope that helps. I remember it being a pain once myself, but my problem was
the NIC.
