so here's the latest:

another problem we have been having (which i had thought was unrelated -
when oh when will i learn to stop thinking) is that smtp access has been
dreadfully slow. pop'ing mail was nearly instantaneous, but go to send
something and the darn thing hangs for 2 minutes or so. well, i went and
searched the archives, and gosh darn if something wonderful from rodolfo
didn't turn up (bless you mr. paiz):
http://list.cobalt.com/pipermail/cobalt-users/2001-April/039736.html

well, after adding all of our internal ips to the hosts file (and rebooting
in the process due to the gui problem) everything now seems to be hunkey
dorey. smtp works as fast as pop - no delay whatsoever. and heck, even the
gui has been everything i ever dreamed it could be. no hanging up, no
leaving me stranded wondering if the changes were saved. and top reports
that i have oodles of ram free and swap is unused.

it has now been almost 24 hours and everything is still functioning
properly. i remain hopeful that this will prove to be the solution to the
gui problem.

see ya,

mikey.
