Hi Dan,
At this point in time there are considerations beyond the
cost though. Been in an Exodus facility lately? Heard anything about
the financial problems of WebVan, Covad, eSpire, etc.? Gad, I've
stumbled upon some rumors in the past few days which indicatate
players that I never expected to have problems may very well be
heading for the auction block. It wasn't long ago when one could
make big bucks in cyberspace on a very small margin. In today's
market, however, there's no telling who is going to be around
tomorrow.
We're an itty bitty little player. Time was when I'd call
the likes of a 'tier 1' provider for quotes on bandwidth and my
calls wouldn't even be returned. Now I've got 'major account'
executives courting me in the hope that we'll buy from them. Just
this week I had a 4 hour meeting with a rep from a major player who
literally laughed at me about 6 months ago when I told them how much
bandwidth we needed. Today their not only after my business, after
graveling rather impressively, the very same rep offered to meet or
beat the quotes I've gotten from other providers. Even so, trying to
determine who is going to be around tomorrow makes decisions such as
these more than a bit difficult.
The point is that the lowest cost option may not be the best
choice in today's enviornment. Then again...one really never knows
about these kind of things.
Peace be with you,
Brent Sims
