/ is a partition, not a file.  Most likely you need to clean out some logs
in /var/log/  remove any of the .gz files that are in there.  There are
also quite a few messages in the archives about this very problem and how
to move and simlink files to make even more room.  Take care of this right
away, if you totally fill up that partition you will be unable to su to
root and logging will stop on the machine.  The only way to recover then
is to remove the hard drive and mount on another machine.
