David,

Thanks for the lengthy response (below), but I do seem
to be logged on to my unit via a null modem cable, as
root.  I also seem to be able to be able to perform
most actions as root normally would...?

I just don't understand why I can't reach it via any
other channels other than the serial console port on
the back..?  I also don't understand why the values
will not stick when I run through putting in the new
settings as it instructs in my book.

If it's not fixable then I guess I'll have to go for
the restore CD steps as you outlined below.
