Remember you are running at level 0.
Somethings may not work in that run level
You might look at the file
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
to see if the changes were actually written to the disk.
You could try running /etc/rc.d/init.d/lcd-showip

I am trying to recall your original problem, wasn't it that
you
could only access the machine through "ftp" and not any
other services. Think about what happened when you tried
to access and failed. Look for things that might have caused
the failure.
If all else fails there is always the restore CD.
