I was able to log in via the null-modem serial cable
finally.  Funny that my book-documentation says 9600
baud, and yet 115200 baud was what really worked. 
Thanks much for the tip.

Now what has me perplexed is why when I reset the IP
values through my LCD panel they do not "stick" after
I save them and exit the setup screens?  Is there a
way I can test something about the LCD screen controls
while logged in as root now to see if this is broken?
