Hi Carrie,
This is an educated guess... I've never bothered to try it.
But we host a couple of virtual ISPs and we have a few users that
run remotely hosted freemail services. In each of those cases email
is not handled by our servers. For a whole lot of reasons (wait till
something goes wrong and all involved start pointing fingers - it's
always our fault) we've told such users what to expect and simply
left it at that - we're either responsible for their email or we're
not, it's as simple as that from where I sit.
But I have pondered the situation considerably.
I think if you set up sendmail to relay for the domain
(add it as a relay to the servers /etc/mail/access file, everything
will work just fine. I don't like the idea of setting up a relay of
this sort on a production machine so I'll stick with what we've been
doing but I don't think sendmail is looking for the mail exchanger
locally as much as it is refusing to relay email for a domain for
which DNS is saying it's not supposed to handle the email for.
