If you installed a new package of mysql, it may happen it overwrited the
priviledge table and set the new mysql root password to a default password
sometime a blank password, if I remember, that the case or cobalt rpms.

If this is not the problem, you can delete the folder left by the first
mysql (the "mysql" talbe that contain users priviledge at least)  before
installing the new on, and the rpm will initialize a totaly new one !!
