While I've never really understood the following, it was suggested
that I add it to /etc/httpd/conf/srm.conf

# PHP4 (backwards compatible with php3)
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3 .php4 .phtml
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php3
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php4
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
#AddType application/x-httpd-php4-source .php4s
#AddType application/x-httpd-php4-source .php3s
#AddType application/x-httpd-php4-source .phps
