[cobalt-users] IMP set-up, .htaccess file --> Server Error

Thanks for the help so far.  
Afree this should all be done on a backup server, ut cannot affford two RaQ4s :-(  And your experiences should be a closer indicator of what the result will be that an installation on a Debian setup!

This morning I tried with .htaccess file containing variations on the commands I was given (and twhich I found in archives, etc):

Such as (each a different attempt among others):
------------------------
php_flag magic_quotes_gpc Off
php_flag track_vars On
------------------------
php_value magic_quotes_gpc off
------------------------
php_flag magic_quotes_gpc off
------------------------
php_flag magic_quotes_gpc on
------------------------

These all returned a "Internal Server Error: The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. ".

A blank .htaccess file did not.  (Other folders do have .htaccess authentication working as well.)

Any help with just this?
