they probably use a script.
a script can do the whole job for them, from scanning a range of ips,
to reporting back what operating system it is,
and then it can run exploits to get root.

its fairly easy.

correct me if im wrong, but hacks like the li0n crew did are done by a WORM,
once the WORM is on the net, the WORM does the hacking on its own.
i believe there is also a WORM that actually fixes the li0n hack.
