Root filesystems are typically small - they don't need to be large. This is a Unix fundamental (sigh) - please understand Unix is a very powerful and fairly complex operating system - you need to keep your root partition lean for good results - look for folders you created a the root level and move them to /home for a cleaner system and a happier unix box.

ps - buy a book on unix/linux and read/understand it will make for a happier unix admin.
