I'd be suspecting hardware after a crash during a compile myself...like a
simm that needs reseating, or a dead fan....
[the hang on reboot may just be a disk that needs to be fsck'd manually
because of the crash]

regardless, rebooting implies the kernel panicked , nothing you do from
user space should do that unless it was something truely evil...

heh...read back into the archives a bit for info on booting via a serial
console and making the machine fix th disk, or seeing what usefull things
it says on boot....
