I understand, certainly, the logic behind using a local smtp relay
rather than one out on the net. Generally, this is desirable behavior
under most circumstances; but if I colo a server say, in Atlanta;
and use a local isp for dialup, adsl, whatever...; and want to use
my colo'd machine for a mail address that resides on that machine,
it's not my local isp's place to interfere with that operation; just
as, if I want to decline to relay for certain domains/subnets, it's
my responsibility to secure my machine against that practice.
You are absolutely right, if it's their network, they can make/enforce
whatever rules they want. I'm simply saying its intrusive and annoying
as the new Carrie B discovered; and it offers no real advantage to anyone
as far as I can see.
