Yes, I have tried logging in via web interface using the IP.  that did not work.

Did you try to access the web interface using the IP address, or just the hostname?

If you haven't already, try the host IP address (I'd try both the old and new IP addresses):  http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/admin
