[cobalt-users] RaQ3 Kernel update 4.0.1 & Bus Speed UPDATE

Hey Group,

I just got this reply from Cobalt (rather quickly I might add) regarding the
new kernel update and the question I posed in my previous post regarding the
system slowness and bus speed after the update.

>Currently, Sun/Cobalt is forming a developer team to
>investigate some issues pertaining to the recent kernel
>upgrade. Please keep your browser tune-ed into our
>supports download page come monday and tuesday, there
>could be a possible fix should the devlopers learn more
>about the kernel issues.

So why haven't they pulled the frigin' thing? Guess I was right after-all...
they're testing it on us first.

NO MORE COBALT SYSTEMS IN MY LINEUP! PERIOD!!

I just built a firebox in a 1U SuperMicro (dual) Hot Swap SCSI case/system.

http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/SUPERServer/SUPER%20SERVER%205010H%20Server.htm

- With a 1GIG MHz PIII CPU (133 MHz bus) and 512/MEG RAM along with *two*
Quantum (now Maxtor) Atlas 10K II SCSI hard drives (Ultra 160, spinning at 10K
with an 8MEG buffer) all running under RAID 1 - Built on RedHat 7.1 with
IPTables and Netfiltering --- AND ALL FOR UNDER $1500..!! Now I just need to
build one and throw in PLESK and say BYE BYE TO MR. COBALT!

They have nerve wanting $4800 for an IDE XTR system -only to find out a few
months down the road that the end-of-life product time frame is about 2, maybe
3 years if we're lucky... If not for the software, what the hell are we buying
these damn things for...? Certainly not for the sub-par hardware. The box I
pieced together above is 10x the machine as one of those XTR's. I'm over it -
back to what works - forget the "appliance" hype!

Argh....
