With all this talk about RackShack going on...
I had an incident that I will only name as "extremely unsatisfactory
customer non-service" with 4Webspace. This was a completely personal
issue that does *not* affect my overall whole-hearted cheer for
4Webspace; they're great hosts. (Connections have been getting a
little skippy lately, down for a minute at a time many times
throughout the day; I think this is related to the China blast that's
coming up - China hackers are actively mapping and testing routes
according to a DOD notice I have.)
But this experience made me look around, and I figured what the hey,
after all that went on with me and the "Head Surfer" from RackShack, I
may as well give them the benefit of the doubt and try them (I *try*
not to judge an entire company on one pissed off hothead). Except for
the setup fee, it sure wasn't going to cost me much to dump them if I
didn't like what I found.
I had *serious* problems with the order form - it kept telling me that
my credit card was declined; on 3 different cards that are in no way
maxed out. I was beginning to think that they had put my name into the
database as "never rent to this woman", but the same thing happened on
one of my parent's cards (different last name). I called them to find
out what was going on and discovered that one of the cards *had* been
charged, even though the order form told me it hadn't.
So if you decide to lease with them and the order form gripes at you,
give them a call to make sure you did or didn't get charged.
My RaQ4 was online in about ten minutes (pre-configured with my chosen
domain name). I was pleasantly surprised to find that all but the
latest 3 updates/packages (and pop-before-smtp) were installed
already. The only thing I've found so far that I *don't* like is that
in /root/.bash_history, my chosen password for admin is there in
plain-text from where they were setting it up. (So check that and wipe
it clean if you lease with them.)
Since Monday things have been nice and smooth, steady connections with
good speed. Overall I'll give it two thumbs up for what I've seen so
far - although that order form thing really bothered me. I could have
gone somewhere else thinking my card hadn't been charged, then ended
up with two servers in two different places.
So no matter the attitude of their upper management, it seems that
their data center is in good operating order. I don't need much tech
support anyway, unless connections go down or someone needs to kick
the box and wake it up.
