[cobalt-users] RE: [MASTER CD] [WHY ??] MAKE YOUR OWN QUBIC DISTRO

I like the feed back you guys gave, entertaining....

The reason cobalt is here is due to the fact any one that knows anything
about turning on a box and reading a manual can run there products out of
the box....simple and easy to get running, Setting up Redhat isn't hard but
most "users" couldn't or would not want to do it. Plus not to mention
Cobalt supports there product well, I, in no way was saying that we should
stop buying cobalt products but like other lists around the net there are a
lot of talented people in this list that could put there heads and fingers
together and make a great simple distro like what the Qube or Raq has. What
Cobalt sells is hardware, support, and easy to use and convenient, they
aren't selling the OS they cant under the GNU public license, so the source
is freely available anyone to use...who asks.

I think the Cube 's speed fits the needs for a server appliance, But I
added 256 Mb of RAM to mine anyway, and as a desktop it wouldn't quite
compete with my 800Mhz beige box ....but would be cool if it was 800 MHz
and looked as they do...

Digitally Yours,
Jason Ebacher

That's when Sun makes them with the PCI video card, and a PPGA
processor socket. :)

As Dan will say, check the archives. :) There's been a few of them
floating around, and searching for "portsentry" in the archives
(located at http://list.cobalt.com/mailman/listinfo/cobalt-users)
you'll find tons o' info on it, and lots of tips from previous posts.

prot sentry will bring up "pr0nsentry" and we certainly don't want
that.. (grin)

I had to modify the FP config files and change the SMTPHost to something
other than 127.0.0.1 to get it to work for me.

The idea is to put scripts outside of the domain to keep http clients
such as robots from reading a script and finding out where you read data
from and write data to. That cgi-bin is an alias and is is placed at the
same level as the domain root directory, 'web'. That's still a good
security measure if the script requires 0755 to execute. But that is not
the case on a RaQ, or on many Linux/Apache servers.

Place your script anywhere you want in the domain and give it only 0711
permissions. Since browsers and other http clients are 'world' users
they can still execute the script, but they cannot read it or write to
it. Only the 'owner' can rw on that file.

www.psionic.com plus the docs included with the install package were all I
used. I found them quite comprehensive and complete.

Hey Cobalts,

We just started the Cobalt "cracking" service.

I found out something weird, the directory "nfs(somthing)" is really big,
basicly it has all the Cobalt system in there (if you look the directory
tree), but, there's nothing related to the administration server.

So, I loged on my server using TELNET, went to the directory /usr/admserv/
-
there are a lots of hidden directories, all named .cobalt, where you'll see
basicly all the scripts. Then, I copied everything to another Linux
machine,
and I'll try to run the services... hope it will run! We can't forget to
setup the APACHE SERVER for the ADM SERV (running on port 81).

If you know anything else, please, let me know.

Thank you,

Rafael Azevedo

I would much prefer to have what Jamie wants as well. To have the cgi-bin
directory totally outside the web site - A Common cgi-sys directory for
all.

My Raq is even worse in that it allows execution of a script from any
directory.

Anythoughts ladies and gents??

Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi,

I am getting the following messages in my system log every 15 minutes:

Apr 14 01:07:00 www kernel: Swansea University Computer Society IPX 0.34
for NET3.035
Apr 14 01:07:00 www kernel: IPX Portions Copyright (c) 1995 Caldera, Inc.
Apr 14 01:07:00 www kernel: Appletalk 0.17 for Linux NET3.035

It seems Appletalk restarting, but I have no idea why. I have searched the
archives, and I found a couple of people with the same problem, but no
solution.

Any ideas would be grateful!

Hi Glen,

I too had this problem and fixed it using the method below from Jeff Lovell
*********Jeff's instructions********

Edit /etc/conf.modules and add these two lines to
make these messages disappear.

alias net-pf-4 off
alias net-pf-5 off

Subject: [cobalt-users] How to install crontab form php-script
Reply-To: cobalt-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi,

I have a php script, witch creates
a text file and then executes the
system command "crontab", to install
the crontab from this text file.

It works, but php(apache-modul) runs as
"httpd" and installs the crontab for "httpd".

I wan't to install individual crontabs
for other users. OK, I can do "crontab -u username",
but this works only as root.

How can I solve this problem?
Or, how can I allow "httpd" to run
"crontab -u username"?

Best regards,
Jens Peter Moeller

Uhm loryan... I am not sure if I had this with you, but I think it was
you. Back then I helped someone installing ssh, maybe it was you, and I
advised that person to run ssh on a port different than 22, simply because
at least part of the people would think that if 21&22 doesn't answer, they
don't have what to do or something (of course some are smarter, and will
spawn a shell from overflowed ftp's etc etc, but hiding is always good).

So, if it's you, maybe it's the SSH from back then?

No idea. But try the the newest version of PHP, 4.0.4pl1 and see if you
get the same problem.

always ends up with the domain it's pointing to in the url display not the
