GIF *and* PNG support!?  Jens, in all of my years of using GD and
configuring PHP with it, I had never even heard of such a library.  Many
thanks for mentioning it.  FYI, I did a little searching per Jens' hint and
I found the patches (for 1.8.3) at
http://rpms.arvin.dk/gd-with_gif/source/patches/ and
http://www.rime.com.au/gd/ (for 1.8.4).  I'm going to try installing it and
recompiling PHP with it tonight.  I'll report back to the list with an
update later.  There are even RPMs at the first URL, but I'll be installing
on a RaQ2 so I'll be doing it from source.
