When installing packages i always:
wget the file to /home/packages
check the md5sum of the package to verify its integrity, these are the codes
posted below the packages on the cobalt downloads page (implemented at my
suggestion </blowing own trumpet> :P) check that they match,
and then install the package via the gui, and restart if prompted.
The OS updates are always rather large, and so was the glibc update afaik,
at least ftp or wget these files this way.
