This is what I do...
Configure DNS for these records
ns - domain.com - ns2.hostingco.net
a - domain.com 123.123.123.123 24
ptr - domain.com 123.123.123.123 24
mx - domain.com High mail.domain.com
a www domain.com 123.123.123.123 24
a mail domain.com 123.123.123.123 24
a ftp domain.com 123.123.123.123 24
The web site is configured to accept mail for that domain.
Configure a user account for the site and put @www.domain.com as an alias
for it. Make sure the virtual site is created as Host: www and Domain:
domain.com.

OK,
I've read all about editing virtual user files, adding mail server aliases
to the Control Panel, CNAME records not working for MX, www host names
handling email... and quite frankly I'm going insane. I've got mail looping,
bouncing and jumping all over the place and I just can't make any sense out
of it.
All I'm trying to do is configure a catchall alias. How hard can that be?
What it comes down to is that I had it working before, but didn't know why,
so started changing host names, removing mail aliases etc. in order to try
and determine which part of what I had done was actually producing the
desired result. And then I lost track. (Incidentally I originally had the
host name configured as "mail", as I'm not hosting the web site in this case
and was thinking I could provide webmail as well using this host name, and I
also had the catchall alias configured as "@mail.domain").
So can anyone share with me a combination that they have of host name,
domain name, web server aliases and email server aliases which allows you to
configure a catchall alias without having to hack the box to bits?
Even better, does someone have a definitive Cobalt email FAQ which actually
attempts to explain the logic behind this system? There's a lot of
information in the lists covering all sorts of different problems I've come
across, but trying to consolidate it in my mind is a virtual impossibility
and it seems that if I can just get my server configurations right it can be
kept nice and simple.
Argh.
Thanks
Chris Bell
