To save yourself a few steps in the future, consider using the program
'wget' on the server to download the source code directly to the server.
Usage is like:
wget URL_HERE

default installation?

That's a good choice.

root ?
I have a version of the source from 1999 on a RaQ2. I just extracted it
using:
tar xfvz wwwcount2.5.tar.gz
In the unpacked code there's a file called 'configure' that you can use to
install it.
./configure --help for options. Unless you change the location it installs
to by default you'll definitely have to be 'root' to install it. Hopefully
that will get you started. If I recall correctly it's an easy install if
you follow the directions, though it's probably a year and a half since I
installed it anywhere.
