I would strongly suggest that you install both from source. The
instructions that come with the source files for both MySQL and PHP
work just exactly as they are written (use the DSO instructiosn for
PHP). Due to the default paths on the Cobalt's you'll have to add a
few symbolic links to make MySQL work but I'm absolutely certain
that their are plenty of people on this list that can help you with
that.

My reasoning is simple. Both MySQL and PHP can and sometimes
do contain exploitable holes. By installing from source you'll gain
the ability to quickly replace either in the event an exploit is
found. You'll also be forced to follow the instructions which will
result in a better installation - you'll know what passwords need to
be set and the instructions will tell you how to set them. The final
result will be that you'll have much less trouble managing your
MySQL server and setting up user accounts down the road.

That's just my 0.02 cents. But the reality is that MySQL and
PHP are very very easy to install from source. The Cobalt's throw a
couple of wringers into the equation, but the list can help with
those. MySQL, particularly, is a good source install to get your
feet wet on. It's as easy to install as they come. By default, MySQL
is installed in /usr/local/mysql so not only know where everything
is, you'll be able to quickly remove the directory (just back it up
to your desktop) then just as quickly re-install it in the event
warrantly service is needed.
