Dear everybody,
You may have noticed the, um, lack of a low profile from me. What can I
say, I like this list. But I just got chewed on by my boss for not
moving fast enough; and I have to admit he's right. So:
I need my sendmail fixed and don't have the time to learn how to do it.
Please let me know if you're willing/able to do this, and what if
anything you'd like to charge for it.
Details follow.
====
I have a RedHat-7 server I've worked on for a couple of months.
Everything is properly set up and (my God) even working. All programs
are patched to latest stable releases. However, good old sendmail is the
weak point.
Regardless of what I've done (which isn't much, due to near-total
ignorance) sendmail frequently bounces mail which legitimate users are
trying to send because they are on ISP networks with improperly set up
reverse DNS (recent thread, anyone?).
I have attempted to use SMTP authentication, but honestly don't know if
the functionality has been compiled in to my sendmail 8.11.0, which for
reference is exactly as the default Server installation of RedHat
creates. I've tried to handle this via the access database (which is
apparently functional) but no dice either.
I think I need:
* Determine needed features
* Compile and install sendmail 8.11.3 (or latest stable version)
* Configure new sendmail for existing users (not hard)
* Teach me a little bit about how it was done so maybe next time
I can do it myself (this step is optional... honestly right now
all I care about is making it work)
Desired functionality:
* sendmail should use SMTP authentication to allow legitimate users to
send mail from any IP on Earth
* users who do not have SMTP authentication should still be able to send
mail, subject to sendmail's existing anti-spam checks
* system admininstrators should be taught (we learn quickly!) what to
put in the access, relay-domains, and other relevant files in order to
keep the system working properly
You are free to tell me my assessment of needs is wrong and to propose
changes. Of course, as highlighted in a recent thread with Dave Raza,
the amount of faith I put in you (and the odds that I'll give you my
root password) will be strongly influenced by your past presence and
contribution on this board and any others which I frequent.
