Thanks for responding.   Yep, I was in the root of the system :( ... and
it's a Raq3.

I can log back in via the shell and have managed to fix the CGI problem -
this was because cgiwrap was denying execution because "755" isn't valid -
so I was able to fix the files in the virtual site directories.

I just reassigned the owner of all the other "755" files to admin as
temporary hoping this might help but am still having problems with the admin
GUI and email...  I am tempted to reboot the machine now that admin owns the
files but am slighty worried about doing this as everything looks ok to the
outside world now (except that email to me gets rejected).

Ideally, I'd like to see an out-of-the-factory directory structure with
owners and permissions for the system directories and files which would
probably help a great deal but I guess there isn't such a thing lying around
anywhere.
