You have not set up an ftp host. www.foo.com would work but you have no
record of host ftp so it wont resolve.

Subject: [cobalt-users] Problem with DNS records on Raq4?
Hello,
I have found this mailing list useful before so I hope that someone can help
me this tiem also.
My problem is next, I have Cobalt Raq4 and I transfered on of my domain
names to it at Networksolutions. That domain name is www.foo.com (of course
this is not real name) and it was working properly till I tryed to connect
from my home (which is not near the samee country where the Raq4 is located)
and I could not connect to ftp.foo.com. At the first moment I thought that I
did something wrong with DNS records in Control panel so I have checked DNS
Paremeters for domain name www.foo.com and Network Parameters for Raq4.
Everything looked ok there, so I have telneted to Raq4 and try to make
dnsquery of www.foo.com, ftp.foo.com, mail.foo.com and everyything was ok, I
received results from query every time, same results as entered in
/etc/named/pri.foo.com so I tryed to FTP again trough my FTP client from
local computer at home and once again I could not, host could not be found.
SO I tryed to make dnsquery from local machine and results were not same as
the results of dnsquery that I made telneted to Raq4.
Example:
dnsquery telneted in Raq4 for www.foo.com
[admin@raq4]$ dnsquery www.foo.com
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 46707
;; flags: qr aa rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 2, ADDITIONAL: 2
;; www.foo.com, type = ANY, class = IN
www.foo.com. 1D IN A 222.77.77.111
foo.com. 1D IN NS www.foo.com.
foo.com. 1D IN NS ns1.ns.net.
www.foo.com. 1D IN A 222.77.77.111
ns1.ns.net. 1d4h20m16s IN A 111.88.77.1
and dnsquery for www.foo.com from local machine:
[admin@localhost]$ dnsquery www.foo.com
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 22038
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 2, ADDITIONAL: 2
;; www.foo.com, type = ANY, class = IN
www.foo.com. 23h43m38s IN A 222.77.77.111
foo.com. 1d1h45m38s IN NS NS1.NS.NET.
foo.com. 1d1h45m38s IN NS NS2.NS.NET.
NS1.NS.NET. 1d23h43m38s IN A 111.88.77.1
NS2.NS.NET. 1d23h43m38s IN A 111.111.99.11
Results for ftp.foo.com are more strange, because I receive results for it
telneted at Raq4 and can not find that host when try to dnsquery it from
local machine....
And if it can be from any help my network settings of Cobalt Raq4 (Control
panel) are in brief:
General Settings
Cobalt Server Name: www
Domain Name: foo.com
Primary DNS Server Address: 222.77.77.111
Secondary DNS Server Address: 111.88.77.1
Default Gateway: 222.77.77.1
Interface Settings - Network 1
IP Address: 222.77.77.111
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
MAC Address: 00:11:E0:22:22:8C
If someone knows where is the problem I would be gratefull to him till the
rest of my life, just please help me "see" my ftp.foo.com and proper DNS
records from any other machine in dnsquery than only from Raq4 !
P.S.
Due to security reasons I am not giving true data about IP addresses, name
servers, etc, they are all made up, but if someone need this information in
order to help me, I can send him in the email. Thank you for understanding.
P.P.S.
At the first time I thought that I should wait a day or two until dns record
information exchange trough worl name servers, but few days after results
were the same :o(
THANKS
