Mark,
Just to make sure, reboot the machine.  It's been my experience that
rebooting will clean out the hosts.deny file for sure. I've seen other
people say this works for them as well, while yet other people say it's not
supposed to do that. But it's worth a shot.
Also, don't forget the basics. Make sure that you've given that user login
(the one you're trying to use) shell access, and make sure Telnet is turned
on.

On the side, you may want to check around and make sure you haven't been
haqd. Also if you've got PortSentry running, don't tickle any ports that it
is watching or it will smack you out and block you.
