FYI ... 4.0.3 work fine too but 4.0.4 doesn't work at all on a Cobalt.

Because I'm compiling the CGI version as a test just to make sure it will
execute at all. Also, I use the CGI version to run PHP scripts to do
various sysadmin things I'd otherwise have to use Perl for. PHP makes a
great scripting language for things other than the web.
I've since found out that PHP4.0.4 has a bug that causes the core dump on
my Cobalt. PHP 4.0.1 had no problem and it's running great.
