Absolutely, and a good precaution, which is why many distributions don't
have it available to the general population. However, outside of the
v6 "updates" or the "security" updates of removing some options (like
"flood"), I don't know of any other "updates" to which the original
poster might be referring. So, the gist of my post still stands... "is
this what you meant?" and a clarification that, in fact, there *have*
been "updates" (however informal) to ping.
