Certainly rely on top!
The easiest way to track the total RAM usage is to use the free command. It
will show something like this:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 517368 247804 269564 307620 58124 30984
-/+ buffers/cache: 158696 358672
Swap: 393668 7912 385756
This may be confusing, but the important cell to be looking at, is the one
in the second row and third column. I.e. the value listed on the row "-/+
buffers/cache" and the column "free". In this example here, the total amount
of free memory is 358672 bytes.
If you then want to see, which process in specific is taking up the RAM,
then start up top and click "M". This will sort the processes according to,
how much memory they use.
