I can offer a solution.

1. Open your cobalt, take out the hard drive, and without modifying any
jumper settings, put it into a machine as the ONLY hard drive on the
primary IDE bus.

2. Make the boot disk found here:

http://www.toms.net/rb/home.html

This is a boot disk with a bunch of decent linux repair utils. (Fair
warning, you will have to use vi if you want a text editor, or mount your
cobalt's hard drive and use pico from there).

3. Boot the PC.

4. Once you've booted, youll find your cobalt's / partition at /dev/hda1,
your /usr partition at /dev/hda3 and your /var at /dev/hda4 (I'm typing
this from memory, so those last two may be reversed).

Once done, be sure to unmount the drives, and you're safe to shut down.

Just trying to offer help, this disk has saves my @$$ on more than one
occasion. (like for the machines that DON'T have a nifty little "reset
admin password" button on the front.)
