Hee Hee... c'mon Carrie... it can be scary doing these installs...
But, your 8 easy steps are right... what my scary self did this weekend as
I successfully installed php4 on my RaQ2, was to constantly do the
installations using the test or show-config commands until I wasn't
getting any errors in those basic things... also, I did installations into
sample directories to make sure that the files were created properly.
Oh! Biggest point that everyone stresses and I must say I took heed to
during my installs: Backup Everything... that is, backup all the things
that could be overwritten and that you care not to be overwritten.
And, if you see someone in the search who claims to have gotten success in
the are that you're seeking, you might want to ask if you can fly in their
shadow while you get yours done...
