I've just encountered the exact same problem this afternoon too :)

Do a tail of /var/log/messages and see if it reports anything. In my case,
it appears that PAM authorisation isn't working correctly as I get
'pwdb_chkpwd[4920]: password not found'. If anyone has any ideas on this
one, please let me know.
