No such directory on mine, or anyone else's either, unless they created
it or their system's been hacked.

The safe way is to reinstall. If I have the machine in front of me, I
can often open it up, move the drive to another system, and use
known-good copies of programs to check it. And that's usually more
expensive than taking the time to reinstall.
